Mulch Installation Benefits
Wood mulch helps 1) Reduce weeds by eliminating sunlight. 2) Retain moisture by providing shade. 3) Regulate temperature of garden beds by slowing transpiration. 4) And finally, beautifies your garden through colour choices. Prior to the use of Wood Mulch, Straw was commonly used to retain moisture, and reduce undesirable plant growth. Before the use of Straw, plant material that died back in the winter became ground cover for the forest next year.
When Should I Plan my Mulch Installation
Have your mulch installed prior to July. This date represents the end of the rainy season and the onset of the hot summer. With summer, ground weeds begin to grow vigorously and moisture quickly evaporates. An unprotected garden will quickly dry out and be over-run with weeds. When you begin a Mulch installation do not place mulch against tree trunks. Mulch placed against tree trunks will contribute to tree rot. To reduce undesirable plant growth use a minimum of 3-4 inches of mulch. Wood Mulch will fade with time but you can restore its colour. Bring in either additional mulch or fluff up the much you already have to reveal a new colour.
Should I Use Landscape Fabric?
Landscape fabric is not necessary for any Wood Mulch Installation. An alternative to fabric is a recycled newspaper or even cardboard boxes. With time, the paper will break down and disintegrate into your soil.
Use fabric if you wish to do no additional garden work or cultivation. If you wish to reduce the amount of maintenance in your garden landscape fabric can be an instant time saver. Either a woven or non-woven fabric will be sufficient for your installation. When installing Bark nuggets always use fabric.
