Sod Installation: Kentucky Blue Grass or Freedom Fescue?

  • Kentucky Bluegrass is used on golf courses in Alberta
  • Freedom Fescue is used along Calgary roadways as a way of stabilizing soil

Kentucky Blue Grass

This particular Sod installation uses a cool season grass, which is why you will see it maintaining it’s colour through our wet winters. However, it grows best when temperatures are between 18-24 degrees Celsius and why it needs to be irrigated frequently during hot dry weather. Most Calgary homeowners desire this grass plant for its luscious thick grass blades, its soft supple touch, and it’s dark green colour dripping with moisture. This grass variety is great for active families and pets because it will bounce back from the wear of frequent use when watered appropriately. It grows voraciously through May, June, and July, so be prepared to cut your new lawn and make sure to bag your clippings frequently.

A fun fact about Kentucky Bluegrass: it is used on every golf course fairway in Alberta!

Freedom Fescue

Do you like the idea of grass but don’t like the work it takes to water, mow or fertilize? This particular grass plant is drought and shade tolerant and requires minimal maintenance, and is perfect for Calgary and it’s climate. Freedom Fescue is a blend of fine fescue grasses. The Fescue leaf is thin and needle-like, and if left to harden off could turn to hay. With this grass, you can keep your lawn a little longer (5 inches) and once it reaches this height the blades slow their growth. In fact, this grass grows so slowly you may only need to cut your lawn 7 or 8 times the whole year. It requires no additional water except for rain and needs no fertilizer. However, this Sod installation is not wear tolerant, so we would not suggest larger or active pets.

A fun fact about Freedom Fescue is that is used along Calgary roadways as a way of stabilizing soil.
